Man arrested in Orlando in fatal shootings at Clair-Mel gas station

TAMPA — A man was arrested Wednesday in Orlando in connection with the deaths of two men found shot to death early Tuesday outside a Clair-Mel area gas station.

Raynald Joseph Lamothe, 31, faces murder charges in the deaths of Dremaine Vashaun Johnson, 24, and James J. Nicholas, 23.

The two men were found dead after 1 a.m. Tuesday near the gas pumps at a Chevron station at 7710 Madison Ave. The shootings occurred less than 24 hours after Hurricane Irma passed through the Tampa Bay area.

A witness to the crime told investigators the person who shot the pair fled the area in a dark-colored Nissan Altima, Hillsborough sheriff's officials said. The same witness later identified Lamothe in a photo lineup.

Sheriff's deputies in Orange County had come into contact with Lamothe during a trespassing call at a 7-Eleven near Orlando, authorities said. Lamothe was driving a Nissan Altima, which had a bullet hole in it. Deputies also found blood in a passenger seat, officials said.
